What can we expect from Jimmy Palmer on NCIS now that Brian Dietzen has been made a series regular? — Marc
ADAM: With Ducky sidelined by his heart attack, look for Palmer to jump scalpel-first into his job as acting coroner. “He really has to take over the reins, [and] it points out both Palmer’s strengths and weaknesses,” executive producer Gary Glasberg says. But what happens when Ducky comes back? “They work so brilliantly together as a team,” Glasberg says. “[But] Palmer is assuming a certain role. Inherently, there are moments [of conflict]. There’s a great episode down the road when Ducky has to rediscover his mojo.”
AFTER HARPER DEARING’S BOMB DESTROYED THE NAVY YARD AND NCIS HEADQUARTERS, THE EMOTIONALLY AND PSYCHICALLY DAMAGED NCIS TEAM MUST PICK UP THE PIECES AND CONTINUE THE HUNT FOR THE ELUSIVE SUSPECT, ON THE 10TH SEASON PREMIERE OF “NCIS,” TUESDAY, SEPT. 25
Richard Schiff (“The West Wing”) Returns as Harper Dearing
CHEAT TWEET: A bomb @ #NCIS & Ducky has a heart attack – will NCIS recover & catch Harper Dearing? season pre. 9/25pm 8ET/PT
“Extreme Prejudice” – Harper Dearing’s latest act of terrorism ripped through NCIS headquarters in last season’s cliffhanger finale, sparking a cross-agency manhunt for the criminal mastermind on the 10th season premiere of NCIS, Tuesday, Sept. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Richard Schiff (“The West Wing”) returns as Harper Dearing.
Going into NCIS’ 10th season, you’d think we’ve learned all there is to know about Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Think again. As I reported last week, an October episode will introduce Star Wars vet Billy Dee Williams as Gibbs’ namesake.
“It’s a relationship that existed between Gibbs’ father, Jackson [Ralph Waite, who’ll return], and one of his best friends, named Leroy Jethro,” says exec producer Gary Glasberg. “Billy Dee’s LJ will provide unexpected insight into the men who influenced Gibbs,” as well as a startling revelation about his family. Gibbs will also have his hands full with a new basement construction project that won’t be revealed until the finale.
Brian Dietzen plays the role of Jimmy Palmer on the CBS hit show NCIS. He was called in one day as a guest star role to play as an assistant to the medical examiner. Nine years later he is still part of the show and just recently got signed to be a series regular. Brian and I talk about NCIS, what to expect for the tenth season this fall, and his own film that he produced called Congratulations.
Art Eddy: NCIS is such a great show and the cast has a great chemistry. You came on the show back in 2004. How did you get to play the part of Jimmy Palmer?
Brian Dietzan: Well I got called in when the previous medical examiner assistant got shot in the shoulder which was part of the storyline. So they needed someone to come and fill in. So I was only actually supposed to be there for one day. I had a one day guest star and I think that is what a lot of actors dream about. When you go in for a one day guest star they always think hopefully they will leave the door open and I can come back next week. So it happens to be nine years later and I’m still working on the thing so it really worked out for me.
AE: How was it to be the new guy on the show back then and was there a hazing process for you as the newbie?
BD: (Laughs) No it was just the opposite. It is actually known by a lot of the guest stars and a lot people that visit our set that it is probably one of the nicest sets that you have ever been on. It is headed up by Mark Harmon. He makes a point to go up to every guest star that we have and sitting down and chatting with them. He doesn’t do it because he feels obliged to do it. It is more of just the tenor of the set. It is very inclusive and we are very blessed that we are ten years into this run for the show, wow it has been a whole decade. Everyone really gets along well. Everyone really likes what they do for a living. We are really, really blessed.
AE: Recently I saw that you were promoted to series regular on the show, which is going into its 10th season. Congratulations on the promotion. How was it to get the news?
BD: Oh it was really great. It was very cool. Gary Glasberg is our show runner now. He has done a fantastic job of pushing the character of Jimmy Palmer to the forefront. Also to show what this guy (Jimmy Palmer) is going through the last couple seasons. I really owe Gary a huge debt for pushing Jimmy Palmer for where he is today. I think with that natural progression of the character’s back story, getting engaged, getting married, and all kinds of stuff the network said let’s make sure we keep this guy around instead of calling up week to week to see if he is free. It was really great and I was very happy to get that call.
AE: Speaking of your character getting married I have to say I loved the story arc where Jimmy has his father-in-law come to the NCIS building was great. How was it to shoot those scenes?

NCIS | Next, Marla wants to know: “With Brian Dietzen being promoted to series regular, does this mean we’ll see more of him in Season 10?” Show boss Gary Glasberg told me that Dietzen’s upgrade “was simply long overdue, and something we’d been talking about for a very long time.” The intimation of a steadier presence for Palmer just so happens to make sense storyline-wise, as Ducky is forced to take new stock of life after his season-ending health scare. “Palmer also has an eye-opening experience in the first few episodes [starting Sept. 25], where he really has to step up his game and recognize his own strengths and weaknesses,” Glasberg previews. “He’s basically the acting coroner, and it’s a lot to take on — and that will carry over in the way he handles himself and the rest of the team.”
There are a lot of pieces to put back together in the new season of NCIS — literally and figuratively. Need proof? Check out this exclusive first photo from the show’s upcoming tenth season.
Abby (Pauley Perrette), who we last saw getting tackled by Gibbs right before a bomb rocked NCIS HQ, is seen looking a little dazed — and who can blame her? Look at the destruction behind her! (Photo after jump.)
Image Credit: Sonja Flemming/CBSBut if you think the action stops with the bomb, you’re surely mistaken, according to executive producer Gary Glasberg. “It literally picks up two hours after the explosion, and it’s an action-packed episode of television. I packed a lot in there,” he says. “It’s an emotional roller coaster, and it’s all about the manhunt for Harper Dearing (Richard Schiff). It gets really personal between Gibbs and Dearing.”
NCIS returns Sept. 25.
‘NCIS’: THERAPY FOR THE GANG?
The NCIS team has been through a lot of tough times together — but could the aftermath of last year’s finale explosion include some deep emotional and psychological consequences? That’s what one guest star will be tasked with finding out in the second episode of the upcoming tenth season. “A head-shrinker is coming to assess the mental status of our people,” star Michael Weatherly reveals. “And I don’t think anyone on this team should ever get looked at too closely by a psychiatrist.”
Weatherly assesses: Between Ducky “who talks to dead bodies,” Abby “who’s strung out on Caf-Pow,” DiNozzo’s “series issues,” McGee dad’s troubles, Gibb’s basement of boats and bourbon, and Ziva’s “almost Shakespearean” daddy issues, he laughs, “we are a motley crew of headcases.” “So, yes, there is fallout [from the explosion]. It is dealt with and investigated in the unique fashion of NCIS — liberal doses of drama and comedy.”
To elaborate in the drama department, executive producer Gary Glasberg tells me fans can expect Abby to reach out to her brother early in the season as she deals with trauma following the explosion. “It’s a beautiful couple of scenes, and we’re really excited about it,” he says. So am I! Is it Sept. 25 yet?
