NCIS” star Cote de Pablo is leaving the cast of the CBS crime drama, the network confirmed.

The 33-year-old actress starred on the series for eight seasons, first joining the cast in 2005 during the show’s third season.

“We respect Cote’s decision, thank her for being an important part of the ‘NCIS’ team, and for eight terrific years playing Ziva David,” CBS said in a statement. “Cote and CBS share a great respect for the ‘NCIS’ audience, and we look forward to working with her and the producers on appropriate closure in this chapter of Ziva’s story.”

Her character, a former Israeli Mossad agent, was considered the most dangerous member of the team, even though de Pablo herself had never held a gun before taking on the role.

“The first day I ever went to the shooting range…they gave me the gun…and I thought ‘Oh God, be very strong because you don’t want to show them that you’re weak,’” de Pablo told Gayle King and John Miller on “CBS This Morning” in January.

“And I remember holding that gun and I was just trembling. And I just kept on saying just get it together.”

The Chilean-born actress has been seen as a positive role model for Latin Americans during her time on “NCIS.”

She won an Imagen Award in 2006 and an ALMA Award in 2011 for her work on the series.

De Pablo will make several guest appearances in the upcoming 11th season of the series in order to finish up the storyline of her tough-as-nails character.

“I’ve had 8 great years with NCIS and Ziva David,” de Pablo said in a statement. “I have huge respect and affection for Mark, Gary, Michael, David, Rocky, Pauley, Brian, Sean, all of the team and CBS. I look forward to finishing Ziva’s story.”

“NCIS” returns with new episodes on Sept. 24.

I read that Karina Lombard will be reprising her role as Monique Lisson on NCIS — that’s fantastic! We have news of a returning character that is closely affiliated with Ziva. Now, can we please get some news about Cote de Pablo — preferably good news that she will be returning? –Claire
Given very recent developments, the best we can do is hope Ziva’s mentor isn’t back for a (gulp) funeral.

The fans have created a Petition to fight for Cote de Pablo, help her get the money she deserves and get her back on NCIS. As we all know now it was announced yesterday that Cote would not be back for Season 11. She would finish out her storyline and then exit. We as fans don’t want to see that happen. Cote de Pablo as become part of the show and it just wouldn’t be the same without her. As Tony once said “Ziva David is not replaceable.”

Cote de Pablo is invoking Gibbs’ Rule No. 11 — “When the job is done, walk away” — and has decided to leave CBS’ NCIS.

The actress — whose contract expired at the end of Season 10 — will appear at the start of Season 11 (premiering Sept. 24) to conclude Ziva’s story.

“I’ve had eight great years with NCIS and Ziva David,” the actress shares. “I have huge respect and affection for Mark, Gary, Michael, David, Rocky, Pauley, Brian, Sean, all of the team and CBS. I look forward to finishing Ziva’s story.”

In a statement, CBS said, “We respect Cote’s decision, thank her for being an important part of the NCIS team, and for eight terrific years playing Ziva David. Cote and CBS share a great respect for the NCIS audience, and we look forward to working with her and the producers on appropriate closure in this chapter of Ziva’s story.”

News of De Pablo’s departure comes at the proverbial 11th hour, since NCIS is due to resume production next week. Her future with the show has been conspicuously in question since the spring, when her character of Ziva was steered into a dangerous mission of vengeance, at one point winding up in a (seemingly) brutal car crash.

After emerging from that episode-ending cliffhanger surprisingly unscathed, by season’s end Ziva and others had resigned from NCIS — and then the season ended with a four-month time jump, the disenfranchised agents thus far unaccounted for.
Show boss Gary Glasberg maintained back in April, when de Pablo stood as the only cast member unsigned for Season 11, “I’m confident that things will work out, and we’ll present the best finale that we can and go from there.”

Question: Any NCIS tidbits to share on the new season? —Cheryl
Ausiello:
There’s some serious WTF?! buzz surrounding the CBS smash’s Sept. 24 premiere, and here’s why: The episode is titled “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.” (Trend alert: This is the third instance in recent memory of an hour-long drama using this expression as an episode title, following Scandal and The Good Wife.) Maybe the title is a nod to the insane workload dropped on the desk of the I.T. department’s newest hire Ozzy, a towering figure who’s tasked with digging up information on an intruder and tracking down a potential hacker.

NCIS devotees who can’t wait until September to get their next Brian Dietzen fix, you’re in luck. The fan favorite, who plays junior medical examiner Jimmy Palmer on the hit CBS drama, has co-written and stars in a new indie romantic dramedy, Congratulations (available July 30 on Video on Demand).

The role is a bit of a departure from the recently wed Jimmy: Dietzen plays a lovesick schlub whose longtime girlfriend (Justified’s Abby Miller, who also co-wrote the film) rejects his marriage proposal. “The character is very different,” Dietzen says, “although the marketing-slash-producer part of me wants to say, ‘It’s just like Jimmy Palmer in a movie! Let’s see if we can get 22 million people to watch this!'”

As for what’s coming up on NCIS’s new season, Dietzen pleads ignorance. “I was live-tweeting the finale with [executive producer] Gary Glasberg, and I looked at him and said, ‘What the hell just happened?'” remembers Dietzen of the puzzling cliffhanger that depicted Gibbs (Mark Harmon) as a sniper. “And he said, ‘You’ll figure it out next season.’ I said, ‘Come on, I’m in the cast — I’m not gonna tell anybody!'”

This much Dietzen can say: “There’s a baby in the future for Jimmy and his wife, Breena [Michelle Pierce]. We’re going to try to adopt. But outside of that, Gary hasn’t told me anything. I’m gonna take him golfing and pry him for answers.”

NCIS starts shooting in a few weeks. Any info on whether Cote de Pablo will be with us for Season 11? I’m really starting to stress out about this. –Emily
You and me both. I gotta be honest, I’ve been working the phones and the cone of silence surrounding this sitch is growing… conspicuous. After all, it’s not like Ziva was left dangling from the ledge of a skyscraper and it’d be a massive spoiler to say De Pablo was on board to return. Then again, show boss Gary Glasberg did say (way back in April), “I’m confident that things will work out” with her deal.

Does NCIS plan on continuing the storyline regarding McGee’s father having Stage 4 cancer? –Jeannie
Show boss Gary Glasberg was “really pleased” with that March episode, “Squall,” and how it built to “an understanding — and a resolution — between the two characters.” That said, and though it’s too soon to tease Season 11, he says the storyline “is certainly something that we’ve left open and that we’d like to revisit, not only dealing with the admiral’s health issues, but in terms of what their relationship is moving forward.”

What happened the third NCIS spinoff? Are they going to do it, or did it die and nothing has been said? –Lori
NCIS: Red be dead. Granted, we never reported that outright during the madness of Upfronts, but it’d take an epic poem to detail every pilot that does not make the cut.

Question: What is your opinion on the will they/won’t they dynamics on the NCIS franchise? I have enjoyed both the Tony/Ziva relationship on NCIS as well as the Kensi/Deeks relationship on NCIS: LA. But after eight years on NCIS Tony/Ziva has not shared their first “real” kiss, while after only four seasons we got to celebrate one for Kensi/Deeks. Since both shows have the same premise, why do you think the original NCIS is holding back on advancing the Tony/Ziva relationship in the same manner? I know a lot of shows cite Moonlighting as their reasoning, but I feel that shows like Castle proves it can work. — Cheryl

Matt Roush: There’s a difference between a show like Castle, whose entire premise is built on a core relationship and calibrating the sexual-romantic tension from season to season, and an ensemble drama like the NCIS shows, where a different balancing act is required. I’ve often felt the mothership’s show runners have kept Tony and Ziva on a very slow burn so they don’t overwhelm and take over the show with a workplace love story. I’m not a regular NCIS: LA watcher (my rule: one is enough for almost any franchise), but Kensi and Deeks aren’t nearly as central to the action as Tony and Ziva are in their world, so there’s less risk involved in moving their relationship forward. That’s just my theory, but it makes sense to me. And for what it’s worth, no one really believes in the Moonlighting curse. It’s all about the execution.
