Question: Was wondering if you got any scoop on a McGee-centric episode of NCIS this season. –Barb
Ausiello:
There is indeed some McGoodness on the horizon, though show boss Gary Glabserg at this time is mum on details. All he’d tell us is, “We always like to come back from the holidays doing something fun, and McGee will play a really big part in that.”

There’s much more to CBS’ NCIS this November sweeps than just the introduction of a new team member. Showrunner Gary Glasberg gave TVLine a preview of what’s on tap this month (starting tonight at 8/7c) as well as peek at some of the gifts TV’s most watched drama will unwrap during the holiday season.

WHO’S THE BOSS? | In this week’s episode, “Better Angels,” Gibbs will break away from HQ to help his father (returning guest star Ralph Waite) reconnect with a former war pilot. “It’s really emotional and based on some real historical storytelling that we came across, and it has some terrific flashbacks to young Jackson Gibbs (played by Andrew Lander),” Glasberg shares. “Ralph Waite did an amazing job — he brings it every single time and continues to blow me away.” With the boss preoccupied, DiNozzo and McGee will wrestle for leadership of the team as they investigate a Marine sergeant’s murder. “The Tony/McGee stuff is fun, with the two of them bickering like brothers,” says Glasberg.

WHEN YOU’RE STRANGE…. | The Nov. 12 episode, “Alibi,” guest-stars Eureka‘s Salli Richardson-Whitfield as an FBI agent-turned-attorney who prompts Gibbs & Co. to revisit a hit-and-run murder. (“Salli is dynamite, and I look forward to working with her again,” Glasberg raves.) McGee meanwhile notices some strange behavior exhibited by Tony — a logline point that has some fans quite curious, as well. “It’s more of the arc of Tony working through what’s happened this season — Ziva’s departure, finding what’s next for him…. It’s Tony being Tony, and McGee reacting to that,” Glasberg elaborates. (As for the fact that this episode airs on the date of Ziva’s birthday: Contrary to Rule 39, it’s pure coincidence.)

NEW GIRL | Emily Wickersham makes her debut as NSA analyst Ellie Bishop in the Nov. 19 episode “Gut Check” — and as reported earlier this week, she promptly earned herself a promotion to series regular. Explaining why, to “keep things moving,” a show can’t always wait to reveal a character and then gauge fan reaction, Glasberg says, “We were seeing, and the network was seeing, moments and scenes and a connection with our characters that we all really responded to. Emotional moments, fun moments, funny moments that were all there. And the minute that enthusiasm skyrocketed, everyone agreed that we needed to act on it.” With Bishop first advising Gibbs’ team and then eventually joining it, Glasberg says the dynamic is “new — there’s no doubt about it — but it’s very much NCIS. Nothing has changed in terms of that.”

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS | Looking beyond sweeps, the Dec. 10th episode, “Devils Triad,” presents “the third incarnation of the relationship between Gibbs and Fornell and their ex-wife (played again by Melinda McGraw). “The humor that exists when these characters get together is just a blast.” Then on Dec. 17, the Christmas episode “Homesick” revolves around people stricken by virus connected to the military. “It involves Abby, and she brings in the help of her lab tech friend Carol Wilson (played by Pauley Perrette’s real-life BFF Meredith Eaton. “They along with Palmer end up spending a bunch of time trying to get to the root of what’s happening.” And while Tony DiNozzo Sr. won’t be home for the holidays this time around, Robert Wagner will pop back up as the patriarch in Episode 250, a milestone hour “which is a big deal for us,” Glasberg attests.

Back when “NCIS” started, Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) seemed to be estranged from his father Jackson (Ralph Waite). That is until the episode where a case require Gibbs to return to his hometown — and the two men came to a better understanding.

On tonight’s episode, things have progressed to the point where Gibbs actually leaves an NCIS investigation in the middle of solving the murder of a dead Marine Sergeant to help his father, who needs to reconnect with a former war pilot.

“He doesn’t walk away from the case,” executive producer/showrunner Gary Glasberg tells xfinityTV in this exclusive interview. “He stays in touch. He is on the phone with them the whole time. The thing that is going on here is there is something that is very significant to his father, and it is made clear that it is significant, and that Gibbs has to help with it. He recognizes how important it is to Jackson and ends up doing double duty.”

Another interesting event is that despite the fact that Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) has seniority over Tim McGee (Sean Murray) — and was considered competent enough by NCIS Director Jenny Shepherd (Lauren Holly) when she was in charge to be offered a promotion to head his own team — the two men bicker over who should lead the investigation in Gibbs’ absence.

“There is some really fun, brotherly sparing that goes on in this episode,” Glasberg says. “One of the things that Ziva’s (Cote de Pablo) absence has allowed us to do is have fun with the two of them, and let them run with some storylines and the way their characters behave. This was an opportunity to embrace that, have fun with it, and let McGee and Tony go at it.”

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is that McGee has doubts about Tony’s competence because of the latter’s current issue with sleep deprivation. But Tony finally fell asleep at the office at the end of last week’s episode, and hasn’t had an issue since. But that doesn’t mean that he won’t still display some complexities of character caused by Ziva’s departure, but that will figure more into next Tuesday’s episode, according to Glasberg.

The last few weeks have seen temporary additions to the team — Vera Strickland (Roma Maffia), Agent Borin [Diane Neal] from the Coast Guard, and even McGee’s girlfriend Delilah Fielding (Margo Harshman) have all helped with cases, but this week, it’s just the boys.

Which means we will have to wait until the Nov. 19 episode, “Gut Check,” for the new, permanent addition to the team, as that is when Emily Wickersham will come aboard as NSA Analyst Eleanor “Ellie” Bishop, who is similar to a Carrie Mathison in her brilliant deductions — but without the bipolar disorder.

Glasberg also revealed that there will be a special Christmas episode, entitled “Homesick,” airing on Dec. 17, which will revisit what is going on with NCIS Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) since the death of his wife.

“Then there is an interesting, really solid, good story about a virus that is getting military families sick,” Glasberg says. “It sounds really dark, but it makes for a good backdrop for the Christmas episode and focuses on Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette) working with her friend Meredith Eaton, who plays Carol Wilson, and Palmer (Brian Dietzen). They are all putting their heads together in the lab to try to get to the bottom of what is happening.”

“The Better Angels” episode of “NCIS” airs Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 8/7c on CBS.

Two weeks ahead of her NCIS debut, actress Emily Wickersham has been promoted to series regular status on the CBS drama — and we’ve got a first look at the new addition to Gibbs’ team.

Filling the void left by Agent Ziva David’s abrupt departure at the start of Season 11, Wickersham’s character, NSA Analyst Eleanor “Ellie” Bishop, is described as “a mysterious mixture of analytic brilliance, fierce determination and idealism,” someone who specializes in international threat assessment and global preparation.

Bishop will be introduced in the Nov. 19 episode of TV’s most watched drama when it is discovered that SecNav was bugged during a confidential briefing — a security breach Bishop predicted two years ago in a threat analysis report. Working side-by-side with Gibbs & Co., Bishop will help determine who is behind the crime.

Explaining the new character’s creation, showrunner Gary Glasberg tells TVLine, “What drew me to Bishop is how she views the world. She looks at things in a global way — and that’s true of personal lives as well as the work.” Meaning, “She will shed some light on everybody, on who our people are, as well on the way that politics and terrorism and crimes are handled. She possesses an interesting mind, an intellectual, smart way to approach doing what this team does — not with kicks and punches and knocking down doors but by really thinking. She’s very much a thinker.”

Wickersham’s previous TV credits include several episodes of FX’s The Bridge (as Annabeth Gish’s wicked stepdaughter) and The Sopranos.

One could argue this scooplet pertains to McGee — seeing as he spooned with her the last time around. Melinda McGraw is due back for another encore as Diane Sterling AKA ex-Mrs. Gibbs AKA ex-Mrs. Fornell.

What can you tell me about life after Ziva for NCIS‘ Tony? –Cheryl
As glimpsed in this week’s episode, Tony’s still working through his issues regarding her absence, so it’ll be some time before he opens his heart again. “I’m curious to see what’s next for him in his personal life, but we’re not going to rush into anything,” showrunner Gary Glasberg maintains. “Much like a real relationship, it takes time to recover and to figure out what’s next, and the one thing we’re really trying to do is approach this from the standpoint of as if it’s real. You have to give people” – the audience included – “time to ‘mourn’ and deal with their feelings, and then re-embrace why they watch NCIS.“
