Question: My friend Leticia needs some cheering up, and a really good NCIS Abby-related brand-new spoiler/scoop seems to be the only thing that will work. — Ruby H
Ausiello:
If “really good” will cheer her up, this oughta leave her ecstatic! Pauley Perrette told TVLine at the Trevor Live benefit in L.A. Sunday that she was not only shooting “a very, very Abby episode” but one that “people have been asking for… for 10 years.” In it, she explained, “we actually go back and find out about Abby’s past and childhood.”

Question: I’m excited to see the inside of Tony’s apartment in NCIS‘ Dec. 18 episode. Any hints of what we’ll find? —Mary
Ausiello:
You’ll find “a lot of Michael Weatherly in it,” teases Perrette, who says Tony’s portrayer was a very hands-on interior decorator. “He picked out a lot of stuff — he has amazing taste. His [real-life] house is decorated so immaculately and with a lot of class. So there are couple Michael Weatherly things in there — and one really big surprise.”

On NCIS, Tony DiNozzo is always getting his head slapped, but does he need to have it shrunk, too? Michael Weatherly has created a couple of surreal YouTube clips in which the raffish agent is confronted by Dr. Phil at the behest of concerned buddy Jimmy Palmer — based, he says, on “the idea that DiNozzo would get grilled psychologically by someone even more alpha-male than [Mark Harmon’s] Gibbs.”

Weatherly concedes that taking the hit dramedy’s characters into strictly comedic territory “did confuse some” at the network when he proposed the webisodes. “There were definitely some raised eyebrows. But I think that DiNozzo, Jimmy Palmer [Brian Dietzen] and Abby Sciuto [Pauley Perrette] are the tricycle of comedy on the show, so that was an appropriate usage of characters.” Sean Murray’s McGee also has a cameo.

“CBS allowed me to do this, but it’s definitely not sanctioned,” says the 007-loving Weatherly. “It’s the Never Say Never Again of NCIS.”

For Dr. Phil, interacting with fictional characters was a first. “I’m an ardent NCIS fan, so I was totally up on DiNozzo’s pathology,” he says. “From the problems he has with his dad to all his failed relationships to how he relates to his coworkers, he’s a shrink’s field day. I’ve had some real-life Tonys on the show, and they make for great television.”

After taping the bits, Dr. Phil says he told the actors he fantasized about being a character on the show who gets shot and dies from his wounds. “Sick, I know!” he says. “Then again, maybe Michael could just slap my character in the head to get even.”

Is there anything you can tell us about McGee on NCIS? — Tara, via Twitter
ADAM:
McGee’s upcoming undercover mission with Fornell and Gibbs’ ex-wife Diane (returning guest star Melinda McGraw) will be very uncomfortable for him. “She ends up having to spend the night with McGee, and you can only imagine what sort of comes out of that,” executive producer Gary Glasberg says with a laugh. “This is a woman who is very sharp and very shrewd,” he says. “This a situation that she can’t help but have some fun with, and she takes full advantage of that. McGee is absolutely terrified.”

NCIS has generally been known to go for big, explosive two-parters during November sweeps. But this season, TV’s most-watched drama wanted to go a little deeper.

In last week’s episode, Gibbs (Mark Harmon) & Co.’s investigation of a Navy lietenant’s murder implicated Joe Westcott (guest star Brad Beyer), a Marine who was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after having lost many of his men during an ambush overseas. Since the show had already built a season-long theme of “fallen heroes,” the story fit naturally.

“We’ve been talking to the Navy and the Marines about doing a PTSD story for a long time,” executive producer Gary Glasberg tells TVGuide.com. “It’s a delicate subject matter, and a really important subject matter. We wanted to make sure that we did it properly and handled it properly. So there was a tremendous amount of research that went into this story, and I’m really proud of it.”

The research was also intense for Beyer, who says he spent days watching and studying interviews with soldiers impacted by PTSD. “The one thing that stood out in my head is a lot of these guys that come back, you don’t necessarily know what’s wrong with them. It can be really subtle,” Beyer says. “These guys are always reliving it. They can’t decipher between memory and what’s going on in the present. I did the best I could to bring a sort of heightened sense to the confusion.”

Indeed, in the first hour, Westcott discovers that the attack he believes he and his friend suffered was all in his head. Instead of being the victim, he was actually the aggressor. Believing he recognized someone who led the ambush that killed his men, Westcott gave pursuit and initiated the skirmish that ultimately got his friend killed. That realization forces Westcott to finally seek help.

However, in the closing moments of last week’s episode, it’s revealed that the man Westcott attacked perhaps was involved in the ambush on Westcott’s unit.

“Within the hallucinations and not being able to determine what’s real from memory, there is some actual, real truth,” Beyer says. “By picking apart the situation to see what was real, they can get to the bottom of what actually happened. It just confirms that he’s not absolutely crazy, that he’s not dreaming up all these things.”

But that doesn’t take away from that fact that Westcott is suffering and in need of help. The question remains: Does he have a support system that will allow him to seek treatment? “His family and his relationships with his brother and his father are very complex,” Beyer says. “His father was an ex-Marine. These people aren’t really great with outwardly showing their emotion and their affection. When his father finds out there’s something wrong, he doesn’t know how to handle it. The first thing he does is become judgmental instead of sitting down and saying, ‘Son, what’s the matter?’ It’s a big hindrance, and that’s part of the hurdle that he’s got to overcome to get better.”

Enter Gibbs, a fellow former Marine who perhaps knows better how to help. “They bond over the fact that they have been in combat at different points in their lives and understand the trauma and the responsibility and all the things that go along with it,” Glasberg says. “Gibbs recognizes what this kid is going through, and decides to sort of take him under his wing.”

Adds Beyer: “Gibbs’ willingness to help Westcott and stand by him through all the craziness allows him to come to terms with everything, get the help that he needs, and clear the air. Gibbs sees something in Westcott that he recognizes in himself.”

Will that bond provide opportunities for Westcott to return to the show down the line? Beyer says it’s possible, but either way, he’s happy to have been able to share this story with viewers. (NCIS stars Mark Harmon and Pauley Perrette will also appear in a public service announcement about PTSD at the end of the episode.)

“The thing with guys suffering from PTSD is that it’s a work in progress,” Beyer says. “They’re constantly working on it and receiving help and treatment. The guys who served in World War II and Korea, there was no diagnosis for it. It was just kind of untreated.

“I’m really, really pleased from the positive response that we’ve received from people in the medical fields and the military fields,” Beyer continues. “They’re seeing it as a really honest and positive portrayal. So I feel validated by that. I really wanted to bring as much honesty to the role as I could. I think it worked, so I’m very, very proud of it.”

NCIS airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on CBS.

The NCIS hierarchy will be fleshed out some when viewers meet Jerome Craig, the deputy director who serves under Vance. And playing the potentially recurring role, TVLine has learned exclusively, will be Greg Germann, whose myriad TV credits include Ally McBeal and most recently, Showtime’s House of Lies.

“I’ve been a big fan of Greg’s going back to Ally McBeal and [the mid-’90s legal drama] Sweet Justice, and he’s a gifted actor with incredible timing and a wonderful sense of humor,” NCIS showrunner Gary Glasberg tells TVLine. “Playing the NCIS Deputy Director means carrying a lot of weight on his shoulders. He’s really going to bring the character of Jerome Craig to life.” Germann — whose other recent guest-starring gigs include Common Law and Drop Dead Diva — will make his first NCIS appearance sometime in January.

NCIS fans, what do you make of Deputy Director Craig’s introduction? Think Gibbs will appreciate another layer of supervision?

NCIS | We open this week’s column with a dip into the reader mailbag, where Ruby seeks “good scoop on McAbby” aka McGee and Abby. “It has been a whole decade of cute moments, and the recent lack of their scenes together is making me suspicious that something is going on.” Well, Ruby, I come bearing promising news. Or, more accurately, show boss Gary Glasberg does. “Plan on meeting McGee’s dad, the Admiral, in a compelling, emotional story during February sweeps,” he says. There, “Abby will be a comforting shoulder for McGee to lean on during tough times.”

Elsewhere on NCIS, I can tell you that the return of Eli David – and in turn the midseason Ziva twist we told you about previously – appears to be taking shape, as the show is casting the guest-starring roles of a Mossad associate director, an American businessman whose oil fortune burdens him with ties to the Middle East and Gavriela, a sexy and smart Israeli informant for the CIA.
