18x01 - Sturgeon Season - Gibbs and Fornell (Joe Spano) attempt to track down the leader of a drug ring who supplied drugs to Fornell’s daughter. Also, the team deals with the case of a missing cadaver from the NCIS autopsy room, on the 18th season premiere of NCIS

NCIS | Turning now to the mothership’s own Sept. 20 opener, Cote de Pablo (seen here!) tells me, “It’s a heavy DiNozzo episode,” which is no huge surprise given the mysterious assignment he was handed by the SecNav at the end of last season. Still, she stresses, “He goes through the mill,” setting the stage for De Pablo’s most favorite kind of Tony. “Watching him get in touch with his emotions is a really beautiful thing,” she says. What pretty lady will help Tony land when he crashes from all the pressure? Fret not, it’s strictly professional: Judging Amy‘s Wendy Makenna will return as NCIS shrink Dr. Rachel Cranston.
The cast of “NCIS” was also in attendance to the big CBS event. The crew of the highly popular series is currently filming season nine, and seeing as the close of season eight left some major cliffhangers, “NCIS” fans have a lot of questions to be answered.
“I’m getting hounded on Twitter and the street everywhere,” exclaims Pauley Perrette. “‘What’s in the envelope?!’ We’re the last people to know. That’s in all the smart people/writer’s hands.”
Cote De Pablo says to expect a whole lot of DiNozzo in the upcoming season. “I’m not going to give it all away but it’s really good and it’s really interesting. It’s DiNozzo heavy, which I love!”
Question: Any scoops about the new NCIS season? I am dying to know if there’s something new, something big! — Victoria
Ausiello: Is a new agent big enough for you? Though he won’t be a series regular, the show is adding to the roster a new recurring character, a potentially deadly Fed named Stratton.
Meeting the team’s family is always a gas on NCIS, and this latest bit of casting is no exception. We’re about to meet a very special member of Special Agent Timothy McGee’s family in season nine of the CBS drama, which begins Sept. 20. And the newest member of the family tree is….
Lily Tomlin!
The veteran TV actor will follow in the footsteps of Ralph Waite (who played Gibbs’ dad) and Robert Wagner (DiNozzo’s pa!) to depict Penelope, McGee’s grandmother. She’ll show up in the early fall. “We are very excited to have the gifted Lily Tomlin join us to play McGee’s grandmother,” says NCIS exec producer Gary Glasberg. ”We know she’ll bring extraordinary heart and pathos and humor to the show and the cast and crew are thrilled to have her. But don’t let the word grandmother fool you. Penelope is sharp as a tack and we’re about to learn some things about McGee’s family that have never been revealed.”
Question: How many episodes of NCIS will Sarah Jane Morris appear in this season? —Gia
Ausiello: At least one — the Sept. 20 season premiere. “Sarah Jane Morris will be coming back, but what our NCIS Agents need from EJ might surprise everyone,” teases exec producer Gary Glasberg. “People should expect the unexpected. A lot of questions will be answered in the first episode and there will be plenty of fun, intriguing story tidbits layered in that will resurface all season long.”
Will NCIS resolve Tony’s investigation in the season opener? — Jennie C., via Twitter
ADAM: I’m hearing Tony’s mole hunt will be mostly wrapped up in the premiere. And if you’re worried that the investigation is going to tear our beloved team apart, let executive producer Gary Glasberg assure you otherwise. “Our group will be working together as a team more often [this season] and not be quite as splintered as they sometimes are,” he says. “There are certain things that [the new Secretary of the Navy] may want them to do, and they’re going to have to unite in certain ways to take on those challenges.”
