‘NCIS’: FOUR BURNING QUESTIONS ANSWERED
The NCIS season finale promises to be an exciting one as Gibbs and the team continue tracking the man who has posed a direct threat to the U.S. Navy in the season’s final big arc. But before we get to that, I had executive producer Gary Glasberg answer a few burning questions. (And be sure to look for more from our chat on Tuesday!)

EW: I know that last season you had top-secret so-called red pages during filming of the finale. Are there any red pages this year?
GLASBERG: Sandra, there’s a scene that the crew wasn’t even allowed to see, so we actually distributed it on the set on the very last day of filming. Very few people were aware of what was going to happen, and I think it took a lot of people by surprise.

Q: Scott Wolf is coming back in the finale. How is he tied into all of this?
He’s ultimately going to be needed because of information that he has. The beauty of Scott Wolf is that he’s personable and in using him as a villain this season, we’ve developed a character that had all kinds of dimension and nuance to it. He’s had a lot of fun with it. I think people are going to be really surprised by the way that he fits in into this final arc.

Q: I’ve LOVED Jamie Lee Curtis this season. Can we look forward to seeing more of her next season?
We’ll have to see. Things really climax in terms of Dr. Ryan in the final episode. She and Gibbs have some amazing scenes together. It fits into the whole arc that we’re leading up to for the end of the season. People will have to see where we go in the finale, and we’ll figure out what’s going to happen after that.

Q: Last quick-fire question, Pauley tweeted a picture of her stunt double. Why does Abby need a stunt double in the finale?
Ah, because there’s lots of excitement that’s going to happen in the finale. I highly, highly recommend that people not miss the last two minutes of the finale.

The 2o0th episode of NCIS easily dominated the competition in ratings last night with an episode that honored nine years of triumphs and tragedies with Gibbs and his team. But it was no small task for executive producer Gary Glasberg.

“It was really an homage to fans. I hope it works in that respect. It’s very hard to encapsulate nine seasons of television into 42 minutes and I hope that I was able to pull off even a little bit of that,” he says. “I just wanted to touch on not only the heart and pathos and history of what NCIS has accomplished but also give people a little more insight into who Gibbs is as well.”

Doing so, however, required a few tricks, a lot of thought, and many tough decisions — for example, which moments from Gibbs History to highlight. Glasberg spoke with EW today to give a little behind the scenes insight:

+ How were the “what-if” scenarios chosen?
GLASBERG: “Well, it’s hard to look back over nine seasons and pick particular moments and things that we wanted to touch on. But there was lots of discussion about the writers and the other producers of the show and we tried to hit moments that we thought were relevant to him and his life — not only looking back but as he moves forward as well.”

+ Were there Easter Eggs?
“Watch the episode again, and if you’re at a computer, really frame through the 30-second montage that he first experiences when the gun shot happens. Greg Gontz, our editor, put in at least 100 cuts in those 30 seconds. And it’s really an extraordinary display of imagery he pulled. There were weeks and weeks of time that went into those 30 seconds alone. It’s kind of a little photo album. So people should take a look at it if they can.”

+ Did Sasha Alexander REALLY return as Kate?
“Sasha was out of the country at the time and couldn’t come up and play with us. So she very graciously let us use her image, and we recut things into the episode. The sequence in the hospital room, there were hours and hours of opticals that went into that. And we basically took her from a sequence in “SWAK,” when they got the plague, and repositioned the colors and re-jiggered and recut. This is what we came up with. I’m very proud of it. It’s a challenge to do something like that and I think it worked pretty well.”

+ …same goes for Lauren Holly’s Jenny Shepard?
“She wasn’t able to come and hang out with us either. It’s the nature of filming an episode around the holidays — it’s very tricky to get people. And we were very happy with how that came out.”

+ Will we ever see Gibb’s mom again?
“That’s a character we’ve never had a chance to meet. She left him very early in his life and this was a unique opportunity to do something. So it gave us some insight….I don’t know. Anything is possible on NCIS — that’s what I’ve learned. People said, ‘OMG we’ll never see Muse Watson again,’ and I was so glad that he was the glue that held this episode together. So I’ll say you never know. If we can come up with a way to do it that informs our story and our characters, why not?”

+ When Mike Franks (Muse Watson) died, was the plan always to bring him back?
“Yes. I had a sense of something I wanted to do with him at the time and he (Watson) kind of laughed at me about it. But at the end of the day, he was really pleased with the way that unfolded.”

“It’s going to be a mindbender for people that watch the show,” the actor, who also admitted that Tony and Ziva as a couple “would be a disaster,” tells THR of the landmark hour.

What if special agent Kate Todd hadn’t been killed with a bullet to the head at the end of season 2? What if Ziva was only a culprit-of-the-week? Those questions and more will be answered in “Life Before His Eyes,” written by Gary Glasberg and directed by Tony Wharmby, proving that reaching 200 episodes is a testament to the show’s ability to keep audiences enthralled in an increasingly competitive television landscape.

NCIS — an offshoot of JAG (1995-2005) — has seen an uptick in viewership in its later years, a rarity in the usual downward ratings trend for an aging show. Its most recent episode on Jan. 10 reached 21 million total viewers, setting a season high. In its first year out, NCIS averaged roughly 12.8 million viewers per week. (The success of the flagship series prompted the LL Cool J-Chris O’Donnell spinoff NCIS: Los Angeles, which debuted Sept. 22, 2009 on CBS.) Series star Michael Weatherly, who plays kid-at-large Tony DiNozzo, attributes part of the rise to daily marathons on the USA Network.

“It’s charming on a level none of us anticipated on the production side and USA Network has made a difference in terms of the growth of that viewership,” Weatherly told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s kind of a more interesting mix of elements than you would expect, so it hooks people.”

“I find it hysterical that we have an audience the size we do,” he said later.

Weatherly, who has been with the Donald Bellisario and Don McGill-created drama since it launched Sept. 23, 2003, reflects on the late ratings resurgence, memorable guest stars and episodes and the age-old Tony-Ziva debate.

On reaching the 200th milestone: “The episode concentrates heavily on Gibbs. Tony is living life like what if the gunshot at the end of season 2 happened differently and Kate hadn’t gone away? What if Ziva was just another person that came through in an one-episode guest arc? What if Tony was a team leader instead of the perennial No. 2? It’s going to be a mindbender for people that watch the show. For the people who like to smile, I think this is going to be one of the longest smiles they’ve had in a while.”

On the never-ending Tony-Ziva debate: “They certainly do a dance with each other and they have terrible timing, but I think it has been very much their friend. They’ve been able to get to know each other without the complication of a physical consummation. It would be a disaster if they became a couple, a disaster. Because it’s not Bones or Castle. You put characters like that together. Where do you go then?”

On memorable moments: “The ‘Requiem’ episode, we were in a tank where I got to dive 30 feet down and pull Mark Harmon and a woman who was playing his dead daughter’s best friend out of a car and kick the windshield in. I felt very Daniel Craig. I loved doing the quasi-romantic stuff witih different women; we just had Entourage’s Perrey Reeves, who is DiNozzo’s ex-fiancee. The ‘Baltimore’ episode was a great one last year where we got to do a 10-year flashback. I may have overdone it with the sideburns and the hair dye.”

On past guest stars: “We had Zac Efron in season 3 playing a teenager we busted with a stolen cell phone with his buddy and immediately started to hit on Cote De Pablo’s character Ziva on-camera. He was telling us about this High School Musical thing he did for Disney. We were like, ‘Oh, isn’t that cute?’ Abigail Breslin came on and did a turn as a blind girl and Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet played a funny police officer. Then we’ve had legends like Lily Tomlin, Bob Newhart, Hal Holbrook, Charles Sterling and Robert Wagner.”

On the growth of NCIS: “Over the years, shooting on college campuses has been funny because you have 18- to 21-year-olds being cool and hip. They watch Showtime and actually spend time on the Internet. What started happening two years ago was that we started having crowds. NCIS is a tough sell for an 18-year-old, but we discovered kids grew up with the show. Now when we go and shoot, it’s younger people; they’ve seen 30, 40, 50 episodes. There is a comfort and a family feeling to the show. You’ve got Gibbs as the father and that tried and true dynamic, but everyone pops with their own voice — and that makes it relatable to a whole swath of people.”

On the ratings resurgence: “I think that we have a chart to our progress as a program that would stymy even the most authentic television professional. It’s like, it’s not supposed to do that (rise), you know? We’ve managed to change the show a litle bit and keep trying new things while holding on to the original formula.”

On viewers’ love-hate relationship with Tony: “Some people hate DiNozzo, some people love him. We’re not treading a middle ground where we don’t want to offend anyone. Sometimes the characters do despicable things or irredeemable things. That’s what happens sometimes when you’re a human being.”

NCIS airs its 200th episode on Tuesday at 9 p.m. on CBS.

Jamie Lee Curtis is gearing up to shake things up both romantically and professionally for Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs on “NCIS” later this season.

“We haven’t touched on his personal life in awhile and we’re about to introduce a woman that’s going to get people going,” show boss Gary Glasberg told AccessHollywood.com on Wednesday at the Television Critics Association Winter Session 2012, when asked about future plans for the popular character. “Just look for Jamie Lee Curtis.”

So far, the actress has signed on for two episodes, and it appears that there will be a some sort of spark between Curtis’ unnamed character and Harmon’s Gibbs.

“We’re prepping that episode right now. She’s coming into our world from a very unique government perspective and she will spar with him in ways that people aren’t used to,” Glasberg told Access.

The show boss noted it is a case that brings the two characters together, and unlike some of the other women that have come across Gibbs’ path – like Lauren Holly’s Jenny Shepard – the two won’t have a history.

“It’s gonna be fun,” Glasberg smiled. “She’s really excited about that.”

When asked about Curtis coming to the “NCIS” fold as a romantic interest by Access, Harmon turned to his boss.

“A love interest? Is that what I am now with Curtis?” Harmon asked Glasberg.

“There’s a spark,” Glasberg chimed in.

Harmon, whose Gibbs’ character has led the “NCIS” team for (most of) nine seasons on CBS, said he hasn’t shot any scenes with Curtis yet, but he is looking forward to reuniting with his former “Freaky Friday” co-star.

“Jamie’s great and I think we’re all glad that she’s coming to play with us in our little sandbox for a while and she’s fortunate to have [Glasberg] creating the character she’s playing,” he said. “But I look forward to it, absolutely.”

Before that happens, “NCIS” has another road to travel when the show celebrates its 200th episode.

Set to air on February 7 on CBS, the special episode will take a look at what could have happened if different decisions were made by the characters over the years.

Glasberg said Holly isn’t coming back for the episode, but he smiled and said to watch when a reporter asked if Sasha Alexander (who played Kate) would return for the special.

He also said the 200th episode will feature many eye-catching moments.

“There’s very much an ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ quality to this story,” Glasberg said in response to another reporter’s question. “People should watch this episode multiple times because there’s so much crossing and appearances that happen, that I highly recommend the DVR to be turned on.”

The show boss told Access that no one from “JAG,” the show which spawned “NCIS,” would appear.

“That, I can tell you, isn’t happening, but a lot of people that go way back in the history of ‘NCIS’ [are in the episode],” Glasberg said. “I’m not going to give you names, but there are heroes as well as villains.”

Nine seasons in, “NCIS” has battled to the top of the television ratings, and it show no signs of stopping – even threating to take out “Gunsmoke’s” record for most years on the air for a dramatic television show (a record shared by “Law & Order”).

“We’re certainly going to give it a try,” Glasberg said during the TCA panel when asked about taking over the record of 20 years.

“I like the idea of riding a horse if we’re gonna do that,” Harmon chimed in.

“We’ll all ride that horse with you,” Michael Weatherly (Tony DiNozzo) added.

Jimmy Palmer has troubled headed his way. And his name is Larry Miller.

As EW first told you, the comedian will guest in tonight’s episode as Palmer’s (Brian Dietzen) father-in-law-to-be, and when we caught up with the pair to chat about the episode in a joint interview, the pair previewed an episode that’s Meet the Parents… with more murder.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So what can you tell me about the episode?
BRIAN DIETZEN:
Jimmy Palmer, as everybody knows, is now engaged, and he’s going to be having a wedding by the end of the year, and in this episode, his wife-to-be’s father — his future father-in-law — is stopping by to see where Jimmy works and kind of vet him a little more before they actually get to the aisle. We’re really fortunate to have Larry Miller come in. He’s been just a joy to work with and play with and adding a heck of a lot of humor to what could be a really dour character and making it live and breath. And the two of us have been having a hell of a good time this whole week.

What can you tell me about your character, Larry?
LARRY MILLER:
Well, Ed is the sexual center of the show, which is why it’s his presence really. Now, I understand it’s not written that way, but that’s the way I’m playing it. [Laughs] It’s great. The folks get to know you as an actor and know what you can bring to [a role]. I’ve come on and put a funny spin on a guy who’s really annoying to people. I love annoying characters. If I had a business card it would say “annoying characters, a specialty.” To comment, yeah, as Brian said, he’s vetting, as it were, his son-in-law. This guy is like, “I’m not a big fan of institutions like this. I’m not impressed at all this guys a secret agent.” I get to tease them with those phrases actually. I get chastened in a good way, and we’ll see what happens. If there’s a wedding and I come back, we’ll see. It would be fun to play the same guy, drinking.
BD: It’s been great too, because throughout this whole episode, we don’t often get to see Jimmy Palmer with his close personal relationships on the show, it’s mostly about the cases for Jimmy. So getting to see this other side of his life, we get to see different sides to this character that we’ve never seen before. We see him go through some different emotions that are a first for him on this show, and to be able to do that with Larry was really a blast and a real treat.

So what brings Ed to meet Gibbs?
LM:
Well, I was in the office. Jimmy’s brought me along. By the way, that’s one of the nice premises of this script — what Jimmy has had to endure. For hours before this show even starts, they’re together. Apparently I’ve said to him “Look, I’m going with you. I’m coming to where you work and I want to check this place out and why are you doing this? You should come to work with me instead, I’ll give you part of the business.” So that’s what brings this guy to the office.
BD: And Jimmy’s really trying to do right by his future wife and say, “No, I’m going to take him to my work. I’m going to show him how hard I work. I’m going to show him what a great team of people that I work with.” I mean, let’s be honest, who wouldn’t love going to see the real life folks of NCIS, especially if they are as colorful of characters as these people are? And he’s not sold by Gibbs, he’s not sold by Abby, Ducky, any of these wonderful characters that we’ve all fallen in love with. He’s a hardened individual, and it’s really little else to say besides, “What the hell is wrong with you?!”

Brian, you mention that we get to see a different side of Jimmy. Explain.
BD:
It’s one of the situations where this man who comes into our world is not showing any respect to the alpha male of all of primetime television and the United States, who is Leroy Jethro Gibbs. And he’s not showing any respect to Abby Shuto, or Dr. Donald Mallard. He’s not showing respect to any of these people and he’s also not showing respect in turn, Jimmy sees it, to their profession, which is very very important to him. So Jimmy is forced to stand up a little bit and say “Look, this is something that’s important. I don’t care if you don’t respect me but you have to respect this.” And there’s a forcefulness that I think we haven’t seen out of him and its going to be really fun for people to check out and the underdog finally kind of stands up for himself and stands up for his friends. And say this is what is right. And it’s been very fun to shoot as well with Larry

Well, we hope to see you back when the wedding comes around, Larry.
BD:
Oh, we sure hope that we get Larry back to give away the bride, that’s for sure.

When are y’all filming that?
BD:
We know it’s not the 200th. We’re shooting the 200th [shortly], but I have been told there will be an episode towards the end of the season which will be basically Jimmy’s bachelor party, so we have a lot of bets going to who will throw him a bachelor party. And then the season finale I believe will be the wedding, and there’s also bets going on who will be the best man. We have no idea so it’s gonna come from the NCIS world though, I would think it makes more sense. So it’s interesting, our writers are teasing ideas here and there, although they won’t let us in on a lot of it, which is kind of fun, keeping us in the dark because then it will be fresh and new.
LM: By the way, what’s funny, every guest actor is always saying, “Maybe Ed comes back and he becomes a surgeon and he works with Dr. Mallard,” and other preposterous reasons to come back, but the truth is, it would be very funny to have the father-in-law go to the bachelor party. If one of your friends throws it and [to get] drunk with Gibbs.
BD: It would be fun to have an I Love You, Man [moment]. That would be awesome, and awful. Let’s do it.

Anything else you can share about NCIS‘s answer to Meet the Parents?
BD:
I think the thing that viewers are going to look forward to the most is this is the NCIS Christmas episode and you can’t watch a Christmas episode without walking away feeling better and feeling nice, like a warm feeling inside that things happen and it’s a celebration. It’s not entirely just slap-sticky Jimmy’s getting nervous type of stuff. There’s a warmth that comes, too.
