On the CBS hit “NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service,” Michael Weatherly plays Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo, who is a subordinate to Special Agent Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), but behind the scenes Weatherly turned the tables, calling the shots in a new episode that he directed.
In the episode airing Tuesday, March 1, the NCIS team has a new agent added to their group and she might stir up trouble between DiNozzo and Ziva (Cote de Pablo). Michael chatted with ET’s Mary Hart about the chemistry between himself and Cote.
“It’s an explosive chemistry,” said Michael. “Cote and I always have so much fun,” said Michael. “Just the other day we sat down at lunch and we spent our whole lunch kind of rehearsing the scene and getting it into shape and figuring out what the attack was. And we always have completely different ideas about what the scene means, so by the time we start shooting we are adversarial and I think it always helps that we both have such strong opinions.”
For Michael’s “freshman effort” in the directing world he had to pull double duty, working behind and in front of the camera, but the actor wasn’t discouraged by the heavy workload.
Michael told Mary that he initially thought, “How hard can it be?” Now he calls that assumption “famous last words.”
“It is harder than I anticipated,” said Michael. “But what’s incredible about this group, and you know because you’ve been there, is that you have so much support and you have so many people kind of rooting for you that I felt completely lifted up by the whole experience.”
On the show, Michael is a hopeless flirt with the ladies, but in reality the actor is happily married to Bojana Jankovic, who is a doctor.
“She’s very tolerant of my actor mood swings,” Michael said of his wife whom he wed in 2009.
