NCIS producer Shane Brennan has promised fans of the show that the relationship between Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and Abby (Pauley Perrette) will continue to develop.
In the seventh season, the forensic specialist discovered that Gibbs had previously murdered a drug dealer to avenge the death of his wife and daughter.
“It’s a complex relationship and we’ve just added another layer of complexity,” explained Brennan. “But we would not jeopardise the relationship that the audience has come to love.”
He confirmed that the pair will remain a couple, despite the shocking revelation.
“It does bring a different perspective, but it’s not like they’re going to be busted up,” he claimed. “Gibbs and Abby are going back to being Gibbs and Abby.”
The eighth season of NCIS begins September 21 on CBS.
